Design vs. Statistical Control of Alternative Explanations

Dr. Larry Williams
Texas Tech University

Abstract

We begin with review of an empirical research model as a framework to discuss constructs, variables, and criteria for causality.  The latter includes that there is no alternative explanation for an observed statistical link between an IV and DV. We next compare the use of research design (random assignment) and statistical control (multiple regression) as tools for eliminating/controlling for alternative explanations in experimental vs non-experimental settings.
