Lecture Abstract

Linguistic methods such as discourse analysis, narrative analysis, and rhetorical analysis have made significant contributions to management research. In this webinar, Professor Phillips will discuss the underlying philosophical foundation and unique value of these methods. He will begin by discussing the nature and evolution of language as a uniquely human capacity. He will then explain some of the reasons why linguistic methods are highly useful in management research and discuss some of the most commonly used linguistic methods explaining when and where they are useful as well as providing examples of their use.

Meet the Presenter

Nelson Phillips is the Christian A. Felipe Professor of Technology Management at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Professor Phillips’ research interests cut across organization theory, innovation, and technology and he has published widely for both academics and practitioners including papers in AMJ, AMR, Annals, Organization Science, Harvard Business Review, and the Sloan Management Review. He has also written six books including Discourse Analysis with Cynthia Hardy and Constructing Organizational Life with Tom Lawrence, is the co-editor of Innovation: Management and Organization, and is the series co-editor of the Cambridge Elements in Organization Theory. He is currently completing a seventh book entitled Linguistic Methods in Management Research. He was elected a fellow of the Academy of Management in 2021.
