Introduction to Qualitative Methods: Ethnography

The purpose of this course is to gain a solid foundation in qualitative methods by learning ethnographic methods. The course starts on Wednesday morning (June 10) with an open keynote lecture by Michael Pratt, after which the course kicks off. The last session on Friday (June 12) finishes by noon.

The course will involve:

  1. Understanding what qualitative methods are and how they are different from quantitative methods
  2. Learning to design and implement an ethnographic study, and
  3. Learning core qualitative skills such as interviewing, observing, coding, and, as time allows, writing and publishing.

During the course, the following topics will be covered:

I. Qualitative Basics (overviews, “myths”, comparisons with other methods) & Introduction to Ethnography

II. Preparation Work (e.g., selecting context, research question, access)

III. Observing

IV. Interviewing

V. Coding

VI. Writing & Publishing (as time permits)

Michael Pratt

Michael Pratt is a professor at the Organizational Studies Department, Boston College. His research is problem-centered and consequently he tends to engage in process-oriented, cross-level research. His interests include how individuals connect with the work that they do, as well as to the organizations, professions, occupations, and other collectives in which they find themselves.
