Course Description

This applied module seeks to engage researchers in the practice of doing qualitative research. While it introduces a variety of different approaches to qualitative research methods, the predominant focus is on interpretive designs. In working through how to conduct interpretive research, the module reviews the entire research process, giving particular emphasis to data coding, analysis and presentation. Using a combination of learning techniques, including taught sessions, individual work and group work, the module seeks to demystify the research process. In order to maximize the relevance of this session to your own research, some of the exercises will be based on your current research project and data. Hence, if you have already collected data or conducted analyses, please bring these research materials with you (e.g. full transcripts, field notes, documents; CAQDAS file). Alternatively, if you are in the early stages of your research project, you might like to work on a fictional project for the purposes of the course, e.g. interview peers about doing a PhD, Faculty about being an academic, friends about working from home during lockdown, etc.

Meet the Instructor

Professor Jane Le is an internationally recognized Professor of Strategic Management whose research explores how organizations manage strategic complexity and multiple competing goals. She serves on the editorial boards of Organization Studies, Strategic Organization, and Organizational Research Methods, where she served as Associate Editor from 2020 to 2024.

Jane’s work on Strategy as Practice examines how people in and around organizations actually do strategy in practice. Funded by the ESRC and the British Academy, this research has been published in premier outlets including the Academy of Management Journal and Organization Science.

Her research on Paradox in Organizations investigates how people navigate multiple competing goals within and across organizational boundaries. Supported by an ARC Discovery Grant (2016–2019), this work has appeared in key handbooks and leading journals including Organization Studies and Strategic Organization. It was honored with the SO! WHAT Best Paper Award in 2018 and an Organization Studies Editorial Pick in 2017.

Jane is also a passionate advocate for qualitative Organizational Research Methods. Her methodological contributions span data collection and analysis, process research, the study of paradox, and CAQDAS. Her most recent work illuminates the practice of research design, including designs-in-use and innovative approaches to methodology.
